Pounds of produce harvested from the OK Farm this season.
Things have been busy at the OK Farm. Life Shop and After Opps Warriors have been picking, planting, and pruning vegetables that are used in our Life Shop and After Opps programs, as well as Warrior Catering Company events.
In addition to working on the farm, Life Shop Warriors participated in two agriculture-related outings last month. The Wednesday crew visited the Chicago Botanic Gardens to see the vegetable garden and other beautiful exotic and native plants! Wednesday Life Shop will also be paying a visit to Windy City Harvest’s Legends South Farm, a 2-acre vegetable farm on Chicago’s south side.
The Thursday Life Shop crew paid a visit to OK’s first Farm Director, Farmer Joe O’Meara! Joe is a co-founder of BIOS Farm in Blue Island, IL. We got to see a farm operation on a larger scale, as well as the difference between growing directly in the ground vs. in raised beds. Warriors took turns sitting on a tractor and we even got to pick carrots to enjoy with our lunch. It was great to see you Farmer Joe! To find out more about BIOS Farm visit http://www.biosfarm.org.
Don't forget to sign up for our Farm Volunteer Days!
OK Farm Volunteer Days are open to the public the first and third Tuesday of every month from 5:30-7:00pm. Our next one will be Tuesday, August 21st. Please bring a water bottle and be prepared to get dirty! If you cannot make these dates but are still interested in helping out on the OK Farm, email natalie@opportunityknocksnow.org.
